Metastable
Metastable
A state of unstable equilibrium, where a system can reside for an extended period. A sufficient disturbance (such as noise or an external trigger) may push the system towards a more stable, lower-energy state. Both the transition delay and final state are unpredictable.
- Electronic context: setup time or hold time violations in a flip-flop may lead the internal regenerative feedback loop into a metastable state.
